One of the most prominent German museums was founded in 1816 by the banker and collector Johann Friedrich Städel. The museum's world-class collection comprises European works of art created between the 14th and 20th centuries. The permanent exhibition is divided into three major sections dedicated to the Old Masters, the 19th-20th-century art and contemporary art respectively; the third section is housed in the 1990-opened New Wing. The museum is particularly famous for its extensive graphic art collection which, however, is not on view as a part of the permanent exhibition. While the gems of the classical art collection include works by Jan van Eyck, Botticelli and Rembrandt, some of the treasures worth a special mention are Vermeer's absolutely charming Geographer and the well-known portrait of Goethe against the backdrop of an Italian landscape by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, as well as The Orchestra Musicians by Edgar Degas and the extensive Max Beckmann collection representing the art of a more recent era.
