The Charles Hotel, which belongs to the Rocco Forte British luxury hotel chain, is one of Munich's most elegant contemporary accommodation venues. The 160-room hotel is located directly opposite the Old Botanical Gardens, about ten minutes from the city's museum quarter. The hotel was designed by the German architect company Hilmer & Sattler und Albrecht, which received a number of prestigious industry awards for it, including the Villegiature Award in the "Best Hotel Architecture in Europe" category (2008).
In keeping with Rocco Forte style, there are no overstatements dominating the interior, which conveys an elegant, unpretentious luxury, with light Art Deco style influences and specially selected details for added personality. Take the natural linen sheets as an example: white as snow and pleasantly cool, or the luxurious French cosmetics brand Sisley at the hotel's spa. The rooms are large and bright (starting from 40 m2), providing pleasing comfort and a subtle background after a day packed with experiences. The breakfasts are excellent, as are the spa and swimming pool (15 x 8m), regular sauna and steam sauna. The outstanding concierge has an intricate knowledge of everything important going on in the city, including the currents and undercurrents of Munich's social scene, along with the ability to accurately understand a customer's desires and unerringly recommend an appropriate option. The only real shortcoming, as with most luxury hotels, is the additional fee for internet use (20 EUR for 24 hours). Otherwise the Charles Hotel is a great choice if you aren't looking for a hotel with a story and a bit of local spice, but rather an impeccable, cashmere jumper-type establishment of the highest quality.
