Munchen 72, Munich

Author: Anothertravelguide.com

On warm and sunny days, even from a distance, you can't help but notice München '72 and its large crowds. Whether by accident or design, most of the café's patrons are dressed in bright tracksuit jackets with the famous Adidas three stripes. The café is dedicated to the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games and the interior features many relics from that era. It oozes with sentimental nostalgic kitsch and has an absolute time-warp feeling about it. One of the walls is decorated with a photograph of the Olympic torch just after it was lit, while next to it are posters and a small shelf with Olympic souvenirs. The 1970s style has been captured in the finest detail, including the lamps, crockery and the furniture.

Sadly, the 1972 Olympic Games are also known for the most brutal murders in the history of the Olympic movement - Palestinian terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches during the games. The events of what would later be called the Munich Massacre formed the basis for Steven Spielberg's film Munich (2005).
