Viktualienmarkt is the oldest and most famous market in Munich. Opened in 1807, it is located right in the city centre, not far from Marienplatz, which is perhaps why some see it as the symbolic heart of the city. It is certainly worth criss-crossing the market aisles to soak in the sights, sounds and smells of this establishment. Try out the traditional Bavarian white sausage or Weisswurst, which is available in all kinds of variations, including a biological version. And naturally, there is no shortage of beer, Bavaria's classical beverage. Farmers bring their produce to the Viktualienmarkt from all around the region, but don't expect to find any outstanding bargains. Since the market is a legend in itself, an added price must be paid for the privilege of experiencing it.
