Richard Avedon, Gagosian Gallery, through July 25, 2014
It is impossible to write a history of photography without mentioning Richard Avedon. This exhibition once again attests to Avendon's legendary status, reminding visitors of one of the most famous photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Avedon had an uncanny ability to capture the spirit of the time - in both fashion and portrait photography. As he himself once said: "I function more as an editor. In other words, I could draw people out, maybe in the way a director does with a performer. And bring them into the circle of creative work." Alongside the other now-iconic photographs in the exhibition is a portrait of the sculptor Henry Moore, or more precisely, of Moore's hands - the true essence of the artist.
