Robert Mapplethorpe, Ludwig Museum, May 27 to September 30, 2012

For the first time, Hungary is hosting a major exhibition of works by American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989). It is being held at Budapest's Ludwig Museum, in cooperation with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York. The exhibition includes approximately 200 of the famous photographer's creative works, ranging from early Polaroids to photographs taken during the last few years of his life. The monumental show offers an opportunity to explore the legend that was Mapplethorpe and the development of his art in full, highlighting his major subject areas: portraits (of note are the intimate portraits of the partner of his youth, musician and poet Patty Smith), nudes and still lifes. Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the brightest stars of the New York cultural scene from the 1970s until his death in 1989. However, his personal life as a homosexual was tumultuous and he eventually died of complications arising from AIDS at the age of 42. His images are known for their technical perfection, aesthetic refinement and faultless composition.
