An incredibly cheap and fine family restaurant a stone's throw from the ancient Roman amphitheatre: two or three courses for EUR 8-11. Excellent pasta, delicious fish soup for EUR 12. Everything is very simple, authentic and lovingly prepared. If you will ask the owner - a jovial-looking granddad - for a wine list, he will give you a look of considerable surprise: what, you don't trust my house wine? And he will proudly explain that it's better to have house wine since it is much cheaper and altogether better. He has chosen it himself in small wineries on his regular tours of the local villages. Should you enquire after the menu, he will yell in the direction of the kitchen: Mamma, what delicious things are we cooking today? And mamma reports, wiping her sweaty brow: a little bit of this and a little bit of that... No-one speaks a word of English, the whole communication takes place with the help of hands. Authentic Sicilian atmosphere. And you suddenly find yourself feeling almost as a local - no tourists in sight. $
