Osteria l'Oliveta

Author: Mārtiņš Rītiņš1 COMMENT

Osteria l'Oliveta

Whatever the season or time of a day, Lucca, the native town of the famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, is always scenic and beautiful. Green slopes and hillocks of Massarosas village reflect in a smooth mirror of Massaciuccoli Lake, and the surrounding olive groves seem rustling Puccini melodies...
Lucca is a destination in itself yet, while being there, you shouldn't miss out on an outstanding Tuscan meal!

Osteria l'Oliveta is a family-owned restaurant. Its careful and vigorous manager is passionate about discovering secrets of wine world therefore every dish is accompanied by perfectly matching wine that allows enjoying its taste to the fullest. Everything is cooked exclusively form locally produced ingredients, but the owner's creativity has transformed the most typical Tuscan dishes into a unique gastronomic experience. The restaurant seems to have succeeded in breaking local traditions, making Italians to exchange the coziness of a Sunday meal at home for an evening in the friendly Osteria l'Oliveta atmosphere.

In Italy, end of October is a perfect time for olive oil tasting and it has a special place in the restaurant menu as well, the same way as truffles, served in all sorts of different ways. Tuscany, like Piemonte, is famous for its truffles, and the owner of Osteria l'Oliveta is a truffle-hunter himself (it means that you can try them for a more affordable than in big cities).

Like in any decent family restaurant, it's best of all to trust the owner's advice.
The first course is white beef tartar made of the same type of meat as traditional Venetian steak. The meat itself is a real treat, yet with white truffles it's fabulous! Remember, the most important in truffles is an aroma - you literally have to "eat" their aroma.

Then something pretty peculiar follows - fried jellied meat! Firstly jellied, it's breaded and fried until obtaining a delicious crust, and is served with fresh vegetables. Digging into it with a fork gives out a delicious juice...

Another surprise is risotto. It turns out that rice too can be matured much like good wine. The risotto was made of Acquerello rice, matured for three years, served with white truffles and topped with a delicious quail drumstick.
Cinta Senese roast pork presents a peak of this gastronomic pleasure - its crackling and the texture of meat is beyond any comparison!

And finally a cream puff for the dessert, filled with fresh warm ricotta cheese, served with traditionally excellent Italian coffee.
For better digestion, the host has prepared some "medicine" too - everyone gets a little spoonful of balsam.
The most enjoyable meal and the atmosphere!
