Le Fabbriche dei Sogni. Triennale Design Museum, through February 2012
Marking the 50th anniversary of Salone del Mobile, the International Furniture Fair of Milan, the Design Museum presents an extensive show dedicated to the history of Italian design: Le Fabbriche dei Sogni - or The Dream Factories - reminds of the most famous Italian designers, companies and projects that have all contributed to the myth of Italian design after World War II.
The show comprises over 200 design icons, exhibited in a staged environment that seems rooted in the worlds created by Lewis Carrol and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Among other items, the display includes Philippe Starck's Miss Sissi reading-lamp created for the Flos Company in 1990; the design was quite provocative at the time, combining the old and the new - a vintage shape and innovative vibrant-coloured materials. Other iconic items featured at the show are Starck's Gnomi 'gnome stool' for Kartell (1990) and Giò Ponti's legendary 699 Superleggera chair (1951) which, alongside Milan's Pirelli Tower and Contacattedrale, the Taranto Cathedral, is rated among his top three design icons.
The curator of the show is Alberto Alessi.
