Roma Europa Festival, 21 September – 2 December

Each autumn, the Roma Europa Festival of theatre and music transforms the Italian capital into an epicentre of theatre, dance and music events. The festival's guest list features some of the artists who have left fundamental impact on the 20th - 21st-century creative experience. The list of the most noteworthy events featured in the festival programme includes Storia dell`Africa Contemporanea Vol.III, a dramatic fragment by the director Romeo Castellucci, one of the most powerful masters of Italian stage, and his Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio company. The work of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio originally developed in the territory of fine arts, constructing magnificent associative spaces of installation and sound, presenting riddles which can never be completely solved by human intellect, speaking to people through mysteries which can be strongly felt yet never quite understood. And that is what the theatre that has grown from these spaces is also like: these are self-sufficient mysterious worlds with their own symbols, mythology and stories which are not always completely clear; it is in this mysterious nature that its greatest appeal lies.
The French Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu ensemble, witty and lively artists known for their successful attempts at building a fusion-style single work of art from the combined potential of dance and video art, definitely well worth getting acquainted with their distinctive creative style, are bringing to Rome their Orphée, a production which compiles musical variations on the theme of Orpheus, representing different times and styles.
György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments comprising forty-seven miniatures for soprano and the violin promises to become one of the most unusual productions featured at this year's festival.
Those interested in the radical trends of contemporary theatre might want to see the Belgian multi-disciplinary artist Jan Fabre's Preparatio Mortis (Preparing for Death). Jan Fabre, one of the most diverse contemporary artists, inhabits the creative territories of the theatre, literature, dance, music and visual arts - practically simultaneously, at that: the Flemish artist crosses the borders freely, always selecting the most convenient tools for his work, never stopping to consider the limitations of each individual genre or discipline. What matters to Fabre is the message to his contemporaries behind each individual work; he only uses artistic form to make himself heard to the full extent. Fabre does not eschew extreme means and belongs to the circle of the most provocative contemporary artists. The two main subjects in the centre of practically everything Fabre has ever done are metamorphosis and death. Preparatio Mortis is the title of the performance Fabre is bringing to this year's Roma Europa Festival.
