Auditorium Parco Della Musica, Rome

This is one of the masterpieces of the new Rome: Auditorium Parco della Musica designed by Renzo Piano - a giant temple of music, consisting of three separate concert halls (or 'music boxes' as Piano describes them) which seat respectively 2700, 1200 and 700, as well as an ancient Rome-inspired outdoor amphitheatre (seats 3000), - belongs to the "must see" list of landmarks. The Auditorium is located on the premises of the former 1960 Olympic Village and impresses first of all with its sheer scope. Make sure you examine properly each nook and cranny of the building - it is the details that makes it so special: the lead roof with American cherry tree "lining"; the Roman ruins discovered during the construction work and left uncovered; the trees shown so much respect and left free to grow practically in the middle of the amphitheatre "hill". A bookstore (boasting a respectable selection of CDs) and a style restaurant ReD - Restaurant & Design which serves a pretty decent smorgasbord-style lunch (excellent salad, by the way) are located in front of the complex. The only problem is getting there. You could take the line A metro train to Flaminio and then go one stop by tram but taxi is definitely the most convenient means of transportation in this case. (Walking is hardly an option: the Auditorium is situated quite a distance from Villa Borghese.) On the downside, be prepared to spend a while trying to find a taxi for your return journey. You will also find the slightly time-worn Palazzetto dello Sport stadium - a concrete mushroom built for the 1960 Olympic Games.
