Only ten tables - make sure to book well in advance: Alle Testiere is one of the best (and tiniest) restaurants in Venice. Well, the best, actually, at least as far as its colourful idiosyncrasy, ambience and definitely food are concerned. It is a popular haunt among art and antique dealers and the loudest names represented at the Venice Art Biennial - and surprisingly enough this has been the case since the opening day. Alle Testiere serves a traditional and yet reasonably creative fare (with an emphasis on allsorts of seafood) and offers a very impressive wine list and choice of cheese. As for the desserts - they deserve a special mention... And you will never find the place the same as it was on your previous visit - it is perpetually changing. Don't bother to ask for the menu; the owner himself will recite it from a little book (in the language of your choice: Italian, English or French, all of them fluent). He will also advise on the best choice: the menu largely depends on what the chef has happened to buy at the market that day. The modest-looking door behind the bar - that's the kitchen; you may catch a glimpse of the chef in a starched white cook's cap. The quality of the food is amazing: similarly to many other small restaurants, Alle Testiere makes a special point of preparing it extra carefully. You could almost say that the food on your plate has more than just flavour - it has a soul. Incredibly tender grilled langoustines, scallops cooked in their shells in herb and fennel emulsion. Homemade ice-cream... Of course, it is Venice - you would be naïve to expect to hear nothing but Italian spoken here. Thanks to word of mouth recommendations, the place has quite a following. Of one thing, however, you can be quite sure: chance passers-by don't find their way to the restaurant. Advance booking is a must!
