Enoiteca Mascareta is extremely popular, and its fame spreads just by word of mouth. Its owner, a wine connoisseur, Mauro Lorenzon, has received several prominent wine world awards, some of them adorning walls of the small restaurant. The host himself looks after guests, and his voice sounds low and slightly creaking as he suggests the best dish of the day, and, of course, wine! It s always cram-full and you can hardly find a vacant table without booking. It features austere and authentic décor, wooden tables and chairs and plain shelves, laden with bottles of wine and champagne. On warm summer nights, guests sit outside on somewhat tatty chairs, upholstered in crimson fabric. Years ago, rows of such chairs could be seen in Venice cinemas. Just one of the historic movie houses is still left, adding more charm and uniqueness to the old chairs. The place itself feels like cinema hall, in fact - just sit back, sip a glass of fine wine and watch the flow of life passing by. The small tavern is a great dining spot as well, yet its main value is wine. It is one of the few places in the city where you can taste good wines by the glass, without buying a bottle. They do have a wine list, yet it's always better to trust Mauro's advice, but even choosing a very good wine from the list, it's still available by the glass. Enoiteca Mascareta boasts an excellent collection of champagnes and sparkling wines, prosecco, and, according to an ancient tradition, a bottle is opened with a sword, chopping off a cork together with the top of the bottle.
