If you're yearning for a touch of history, but with a decidedly more contemporary approach, then Annas Hotel, opened just a couple of years ago, is a great spot to visit. This smallish hotel is found in Amata District, Zaubes County, just an hour's drive from Riga. It is the site where the first manor house in the area was built, sometime in the 18th century. Later, the Russian Czarina Elizabeth endowed the estate to a family with ties to Russia. The house was essentially destroyed over the many turbulent years and has now been completely rebuilt. One of the greatest things about the place is the old park - with numerous walking trails in the summer and a Nordic skiing track in the winter. Annas Hotel is also a spa and restaurant, with summer dining on the terrace; ensconced by the ancient trees, you feel as if you're in an enchanted forest from a fairy tale. At the foot of the park lies "Evil Lake" - they say that on summer evenings, the mole-crickets would chirp so loudly that the locals attributed the sound to the devil himself. Annas Manor also has an important page in the history of Latvia - in 1793, the great writer and scholar of Latvian life, Garlībs Merķelis, arrived; it is said that here, under the shade of the estate's trees, he wrote his legendary work - "The Latvians".
