For almost 200 years the name of Līgatne, a town on the left bank of the Gauja River has been associated with Līgatnes Paper Mill and its adjacent village, which is noteworthy a true embodiment of the 19th century economic utopia.
The unique Līgatne Paper Mill complex is not only fully preserved till nowadays, but is still operational and paper is still being produced there.
After careful research work of historical materials, the architectural team of the Līgatne restoration project resolved to go with a "living museum" concept, laying great emphasis on the daily needs of the local people.
While visiting the Paper Mill village, you may also enjoy the vast network of Līgatne walking trails with sections of them connected by small pedestrian bridges. The original trails are cleared now and equipped with railings and sightseeing platforms. The railings are designed using the typical for this area approach with cross-beams that are filling wide spaces between vertical posts. The network of trails starts and finishes at one of the oldest houses in Līgatne - a Paper Mill attendant's house. It also has acquired a refurbished interior, a new roof, bright façade coloring and now houses a tourism information center.
The team of architects also developed design guidelines for the construction of new and modern bridges instead of the ancient ones, yet perfectly in tune with those entwined with romantic tales of the past, in the result of which two historic bridges, Eugene and Wilhelm, have reborn now.
Noteworthy is the architectural solution regarding former woodsheds, which presents a successful compromise between the historic firewood storage function and uncluttering of the courtyard scenery. After all, it was the very heart of this living complex in the former days, consisting also of a little brewery, a pond, gardens and playgrounds for children.
