Riga’s creative quarters

Few people realize that Riga houses one of the three largest museums of the history of medicine in the world, in terms of the number of objects it holds. Founded by one of Latvia's most prominent physicians, Professor Pauls Stradiņš, the museum, which opened its doors in 1957, houses 199 000 exhibit pieces. The museum deals with the medicine of the entire world in all of its fields, placing it alongside the two main pillars that occupy this niche - one in London, England and the other Washington, DC.

The museum's permanent exhibition provides a captivating voyage through the history of medicine, as well as a unique exploration of the human body. A separate hall houses a number of exhibits that are specially designed to help visitors understand what lies underneath the outer layer of skin that conceals how we function.

One of the highlights is a specially made, full-scale and realistic model of the human body, which can be disassembled and divided up by its components. Visitors can actually remove the heart, open up the cranium and separate the muscles, bones, tendons, etc., thus acquiring a better understanding of the actual location, dimensions, shapes and structure of the organs in our bodies.

In April of 2010, a new exhibition hall devoted to medicine in space was added. Among its exhibit pieces is the stuffed body of a famous, Soviet space traveller, a dog named Chernushka. Another room is devoted to exhibitions that deal mainly with contemporary health issues and the means that scientists are employing to address them.
