Vēsture, Riga

Author: Pauls Bankovskis

This second-hand bookstore is the farthest from the historical centre of the city, but its name - which translates as History - is fully justified. The shop is housed in the basement storey of a wooden building typical to Riga, across the street from the Ziedoņdārzs park, and is well known in the local bibliophile circles. Unlike the other second-hand bookshops of Riga, Vēsture still offers a large selection of Latvian and foreign-language periodicals from various eras. This is one of the rare places where Soviet-era humour magazines coexist with newspapers and monthlies from the early 20th century. It is obvious that the books on offer have been carefully selected, devoting particular attention to historical publications - antique editions of the Bible, literature classics in fine leather binding, and foreign books from the turn of the 20th century in German and other languages. This is the only place in Riga which has on occasion offered printed sources of information on the once-thriving Jewish community of Riga, which tragically perished during World War II. The shop also has a very wide selection of various dictionaries.
