Look for a fish restaurant hiding right next to the Northern Gate - this must be one of the best eateries in this postcard-pretty UNESCO World Heritage-listed town with an 1166 cathedral, a true gem of Romanesque architecture. The baroque part of the cathedral, its belfry, was built after the 1667 earthquake that destroyed the eastern wing of the church. The air is thick with history here; besides, the tiny square next to the restaurant is so cosy that you inevitably start to feel as if you owned it and don't even notice time going by, hardly giving a second thought to ordering another decanter of house wine... Oh yes, by the way, you're not likely to have seen mussels as big as these. Ever.
