Aman Sveti Stefan
The fabulous picture-postcard silhouette of the island-hotel of Sveti Stefan, featured in every Montenegro guidebook alongside stories of Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and other stars who used to come here to while away lazy summer days, was transformed from a 14th-century fishing village into an exclusive hotel in the 1960s; at the time, it was the two-storey Villa No. 118, complete with a garden and a private swimming pool, that was considered as the most prestigious one among posh holiday makers. Not so long ago, the picturesque image was all that had remained of the one-time opulence of Sveti Stefani: the hotel itself was reminiscent of a poor godforsaken orphan occasionally visited by groups of glamour hunters, allowed inside in exchange for a ticket obtained from a ill-tempered old man. Today, property of Amanresorts, the world's most exclusive chain of luxury hotels, the place has been completely transformed. Aman Sveti Stefan is the first project of the Asian shark of luxury hotel business in the region. While the appearance of the historical complex has retained its authenticity (except for the painstaking restoration), the interior has been transformed beyond recognition, acquiring the breath of luxury minimalism typical to all of the Aman hotels. The Amanresorts chain has also taken under its wing the nearby Villa Miločer - the former summer residence of the Yugoslavian leader Yosip Broz Tito.
