Eger Karl Johan
By Vesma Kontere McQuillan
Opened in May 2009, Eger Karl Johan is a high-end department store in Karl Johan Street in the heart of Oslo.
It is called MOTEHUS in Norwegian, which translates as House of Fashion. The name tells you that this is a place where high fashion is the first priority. Here you can find the best selection of high-end brands in Oslo, such as Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, in addition to the best selection of young American upcoming stars like Alexander Wang and Philipp Lim, as well as the best selection of Scandinavian designers, such as By Malene Birger, J.Lindeberg, Tiger of Sweden.
This is the first department store in Oslo created with a clear spatial and conceptual idea of fashion and an emphasis on interior design.
The idea of a stage or a fashion catwalk was the key idea in the design of the interior; the concept unifies 5 historical buildings with some 25 shops, each with its individual design. Eger Karl Johan is a place with a cutting-edge modern interior within the historical environment of central Oslo.
The colour scheme of the Eger Karl Johan interior is dominated by black. Black was chosen as the colour of elegance and fashion, ideal for showcasing whatever you choose to put in the foreground.
Another important aspect of the interior was the choice of materials, many of which are rare and expensive in Scandinavia, like the Italian glass mosaics that line the connective spaces between buildings. Certain materials, like the Roman mosaics in the 2nd floor, have been used for the first time in Norway.
In order to create a special identity for Eger, special furniture was designed for the main entrance area and the courtyard. The design of the furniture incorporates an interpretation of the Eger logo pattern.
The interior of Eger Karl Johan was designed by the Norwegian interior office Scenario Interiørarkitekter, under the project leadership of Vesma Kontere McQuillan.
Eger is a place where fashion meets architecture, a place where every customer is a part of the performance.
