Museums

Tromsø Contemporary Art Museum is worth visiting for its location alone. Its building dates back to 1894 and has never served any other purpose but a museum. Sited on a hillock, a little off the central street of the city, it is surrounded by marvelous mountain views. The first thing you notice, ascending its slightly squeaky wooden stairs on a chilly winter afternoon is a candle-stick on a windowsill, holding burning candles. Quiet and majestic, they add a special ambiance and an emotionally touching note to a current exposition. The museum boasts an innovative exhibition policy, proving once again that Tromsø is a city with its unique character and beat of life. The Museum houses a small shop and a café, too.
