Intercontinental, Warsaw

Author: Anothertravelguide.com

While 326-room hotels rarely make the list of favourite accommodations by anothertravelguide.com, the Warsaw Intercontinental is an exception - provided that you choose one of the Club Intercontinental rooms (rates from EUR 140) located in floors 35-41 of the building. The inhabitants of these rooms are free to attend the 41st-floor Club Lounge from early morning to 9 pm; that is where guests are served breakfast as well as light snacks, wine, coffee, etc. in the afternoon; free wireless internet is also available. And what a panoramic view! The hotel is located just opposite one of the most popular Warsaw symbols, the 1955-built wonder of Stalin-era architecture - Palace of Culture and Science. Besides, when the lights come up in the twilight of sundown, the city, sometimes hopelessly grey during the day, starts to look strangely beautiful. Which only goes to prove (again) the well-known truth: everything depends on your vantage point and willingness to see...
The Intercontinental Hotel itself is also undeniably colourful: when the project of the 44-storey building was made public, the residents of the surrounding houses kicked up a real fuss, claiming that the new building would block the sunlight, the little that there were. As a solution, the architects „cut out" a rectangle hole in the lower part of the building, and now it looks as if the high-rise was trying to keep its balance, standing on one leg. The 44th floor houses the most talked-about swimming pool in the city: were it not for the windows, it would almost seem that you can literally reach out and touch the Palace of Culture and Science...
