Things To Do, Saint Petersburg

Author: Anothertravelguide.com

- A boat trip in St. Petersburg is almost a must! Enchanting presence of water in the river and countless canals of the city create its special ambiance, the same way as in Venice. In fact, it's advisable to have even two such trips (if not more), and a guided boat tour would be the one to start with. Just be sure to avoid large ships where a bustle of tourists makes it difficult to hear what a tour guide has to tell. Although a bit exhausting, it is a perfect way for a first-time visitor to learn more about St. Petersburg. Entirely different perspective of beautiful churches and palaces opens up from the Neva River and city canals, and guides usually are very competent and knowledgeable, too. In summer time, morning and afternoon hours are preferable, to avoid a midday heat.

And then you are ready for another, more romantic trip! Sliding slowly along the water in a small boat, with no guide and no haste, one can admire stately lines of St. Petersburg's architecture. It's an ideal way to say good bye to this wonderful city as well - savoring champagne or good wine and a sunset, best time it being 8 - 9pm.

- Being in St. Petersburg for the first time, a perfect way of getting the first taste of the city and its greatest cultural, historical and architectural landmarks is a double-decker bus city tour. Nine stops on its route comprise the city's top sightseeing spots - from St. Isac's Cathedral to Cruiser Aurora. You can also enjoy a very good excursion, developed by one of the most renowned St. Petersburg's historians. Tickets are available at the bus and are valid for 24 hours.

- Do not miss an opportunity of seeing a performance at the Mariinsky Theatre (1, Teatralnaya Square) or a concert at the newly built Concert Hall (20, Pisareva Street). The Mariinsky Theatre, opened in 1860, is one of the world's greatest opera theatres. It features unique wooden structures, fantastic acoustics and the finest musical performances. Shostakovich Philharmonic Hall (Mikhailovskaya Street 2) with its outstanding architecture is worth a visit as well.
