The Echaurren restaurant is a 40-minute drive from Elciego and located in quite a similar-looking little town called Ezcaray; like everywhere else in the vicinity, its strong point is tradition: the owners are culinary virtuosos in the fifth generation. Echaurren is also the proud owner of a Michelin star and indubitably one of the La Rioja gastronomy destinations. However, there is no sign of all of that from the outside: Echaurren shares its building with a three-star hotel and is noticeable only because of the huge parking place. There is no shortage of wanna-be diners, so do book a table in advance. There are two menus at Echaurren: a traditional and a modern one. The first is the speciality of Marisa Sanchez, the second - of her son Francis Paniego, the rising star of the La Rioja culinary world. The first embodies the best of the culinary history of the region: excellent croquettes, black pudding prepared in a special way etc. Do trust the waiter, both in your choice of fare and wine. And take heed should he advise you to order just half of the helping: unlike the prices, the servings are really huge here. An excellent choice of wines and cosy family-like atmosphere. The modern menu, on the other hand, is obviously influenced by the El Bulli school of cooking and could in a way be described as a contemporary version of the historical family recipe book. There is also a cigar bar where you can relax and spend some time dotting your i's and crossing your t's after an excellent meal.
