African Masterpieces – The Story of the Kingdom of Ife, Världskulturmuseet, April 12 – November 30, 2014
This exhibition tells the surprising story of ancient Ife - a Nigerian city shrouded in mythology and famous for its intense arts culture. When a German researcher first came upon the sculptures - made of stone, metal and terracotta by the artists of Ife in the 12th to 16th centuries - he first thought that these technically perfect and artistically refined works were of Greek origin. Some of the most valuable pieces on display are ten copper heads that were used in various rituals. Copper was known as "red gold" in ancient Ife, and was a privilege of the nobility. The most important people of the tribe were always portrayed with large heads because it was believed that the "ase", or human inner strength and energy, resided in the head.
