Wedholms Fisk, Stockholm

Author: Mārtiņš Rītiņš

The best seafood restaurant in Stockholm! Tasting just once is enough to get addicted, even though sea creatures maybe are not your favorite delicacy. Wedholms Fisk is one of Sweden's most renowned restaurants - even great Greta Garbo, visiting her native city once, has been there! Moreover, being established by the legendary Swedish restaurateur Bengt Wedholm, it has earned a Michelin star as well.
The restaurant is located right by the harbor, with its wide windows offering a serene view of boats floating by, while inside fills tranquility and quiet elegance. Much favored by locals, Wedholms Fisk is packed with people even on Monday nights as savory aroma of grilled, fried or in some other way prepared fish seems impossible to resist.
The restaurant's interior features Scandinavian modesty and at the same time, refined modernity - yet no claims for designer style. The service, too, seems somewhat casual, no excessive pampering and attention. However, almost entirely female staff can hardly be blamed - waiters, being only women, all have extensive work experience. Just ostentatiousness is not a Wedholms Fisk style. Swedes, spruced up a bit, go there to enjoy a well done meal, not an overdone attitude. You will not find much innovation on the table either - it is a traditional Swedish cuisine with a classic French twist, everything being absolutely fresh. Culinary masters chose fish for a particular day every morning - arriving a bit late you may find that some delicacies are not available any more.
The menu, though not very extensive, offers each fish prepared in several different ways, some you've probably never tried before. Slightly salted herring, lavishly covered with browned butter, is served with new potatoes and traditional fixings - red onions and dill. Some olive oil is used with butter, making it less fat then it may sound. And sole, gratinated with parmesan and prawns is more than excellent. Fricassé of sole, turbot, lobster and scallops with Champagne sauce - not creamy but more like broth, making its taste fantastically light and clean. And do not leave Sweden without trying their famous bleak roe!
The joy does not come cheap, yet any gourmand will find the size of servings most agreeable. Wedholms Fisk can seat up to 80 people. Be sure to book a table with a view on kitchen - bustle of cooks definitely boosts ones appetite.
Wedholms Fisk is closed on Sundays.
