The early 1990s are considered to have been a particularly significant time in the creative biography of the American conceptualist Tom Friedman: it was then that he surprised the world with his art created from simple materials available in every household. You will finf toilet paper, pasta, sugar lumps, pencils, chewing gum and other quite mundane items in anyone's flat; however, only Friedman's works make the viewer realise that all of these things can actually serve as an impulse for the birth of new art. The ability to transform ordinary matters, obsession with perfection and a specific mode of thinking are the factors which have consolidated Tom Friedman's status in the contemporary art scene. His works have been exhibited at the world's leading art museums, including the New York MoMA, the Milan Fondazione Prada, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, etc. The exhibition at Magasin 3 is Tom Friedman's first Scandinavian show. The artist has spent the last couple of years, working on a large-scale object entitled Up in the Air especially for the occasion; in a way, it can also be considered a summary of Friedman's art and views. Alongside said large-scale work, the exhibition includes some of the most significant examples of his art of the last ten years.
