American artist Jeff Koons has alternatively been called a provocateur, a master of kitsch art and a 21st-century follower of such modern icons as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. The artist, who draws much of his inspiration from American pop culture, has proven to be a skilled self-merchandiser. His gigantic stainless steel balloon animals and other sculptures have sold for record prices and are held by a number of well-to-do art collectors. The exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel is the first showing of Koons' works in Switzerland. It is divided into three thematic sections and offers a selection of some his best-known oeuvres.
