Zürcher Festspiele. 18 June – 11 July 2010

As its main objective the Zürich Festival defines reflecting the diversity of the culture life in the city by bringing together in a single programme the artistically most successful and stylistically radically different productions of the outgoing theatre season at home and elsewhere in Europe - admittedly, placing a particular emphasis on the discoveries of the season in Switzerland and specifically in Zürich. The festival programme comprises opera and theatre productions, recitals, dance events and art exhibitions.
The festival organisers' list of this year's highlights include Sven-Eric Bechtolf's production of Richard Strauss' Salome starring the Latvian bass baritone Egils Siliņš as Jochanaan and Christoph von Dohnányi, one of the most prominent Strauss interpreters, on the conductor's podium. Another unique opportunity worth taking is the chance of seeing a performance of Ruth Berghaus' version of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz; the 1993 production by the great German director has deservedly taken its place as part of the golden canon of world opera. Ruth Berghaus was one of the boldest and most exciting pioneers of opera directing: some of her 1960s artistic discoveries are only now being incorporated in opera stagings mounted by her contemporaries. A professional choreographer, Ruth Berghaus created her opera world with profound consideration for the conceptual and expressive power of the human body; in her productions, movement played an equal part to music, lights and vocals - a featured that made her style so distinctive among other masters of opera direction. Ruth Berghaus knew how to fill her anti-illusionistic concepts of directing with exciting metaphors and sensuality, making opera an adventurous feast for the eyes as well as the ears.
A guest appearance at the Zürich Festival will be made by the great soprano Renée Fleming who will sing the part of Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata.
The Zürich Festival will likewise see the world premiere of Continu, the latest production by Sasha Waltz, one of the most exciting contemporary dance directors and choreographers. The Zürich production combines the experience Waltz and her dancers gained last year while working on dance pieces for two unique venues: the building of Neue Museum Berlin, renovated by the architect David Chipperfield, and MAXXI, the new Italian National Museum in Rome, designed by Zaha Hadid. Continu is developing the choreographic language born in very specific spatial conditions; Waltz's choreography is set to music by Claude Vivier, György Ligeti and Iannis Xenakis performed by the Kaleidoskop ensemble of young soloists.
Do spare some time to attend a concert at the Zürich Tonhalle, one of the world's acoustically greatest concert venues. This year's list of conductors includes the Latvian Kaspars Putniņš; under his conduction, the Swiss Chamber Choir will perform pieces by Schumann, Brahms, Pärt, Kurtág and Vasks.
