This is a small boutique hotel, hidden in the heart of the city's historic center and owned by an American ex-pat. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia are literally just an arm's-reach away. Built in the antique Turkish-style, Hotel Empress Zoe and the building that houses it partly enclose an archeological garden - the word "charming" doesn't do it justice. You feel as if you've been plopped into a scene from the movie "Teheran 43", or caught up in the pages of Remarque's "Arc of Triumph": canopied beds, the romance of travel and a slightly bohemian clientele - artists, architects, journalists... The room interiors hint at Islamic art, and the bathrooms feature real olive oil soap, as well as something without which a visit to Turkey cannot be imagined - a hamam! (Please note that not all of the hotel's rooms have private Turkish baths.) Hotel Empress Zoe also has a wonderful roof-top terrace, open to all guests. Just grab a cozy throw from your room, a bottle of wine and some sweets and cheese, and go enjoy the view - minarets, the blue Marble Sea, and Istanbul's starry skies!
