The Café Markiz was first opened in 1840 in a passage which is now named after the café on İstiklal Caddesi bang opposite the Richmond Hotel towards the Tünel Square end of the celebrated boulevard. It soon became a meeting point for writers and arts devotees, but then lay empty and forgotten for some 20 years until regaining its old glory with a stunning restoration of its celebrated murals and tile interior a few years ago. Reopening as Robert's Coffee in April 2007, the cafe is probably the only space left where you can savour the flavours and style of Victorian Pera.
