While the Besarabsky Market is said to be the most expensive one in the city, this is the place to get your most authentic Kiev souvenir: salo (pork fat), cured in salt and all sorts of spices, and vodka; the former abounds in variations and you are free to sample and choose the one most appealing to your taste buds. If you happen to speak any Russian, the banter with the sellers will be a pleasure in itself - as becomes a proper marketplace. Vast quantities of smuggled Astrakhan caviar are available; it is illegal in Kiev just like in Russia, and yet no-one seems to mind. Admittedly, the last few months have seen a steep rise in the caviar prices, or so we were told. Do not yield to the temptation and, most importantly, do not even consider taking some across the border... The market building dates back to the early 1900s and visually is somewhat reminiscent of the central railway station.
