The Tchekhov museum house is easy to miss - hiding by lush trees, it seems almost hard to notice in midsummer. On the other hand, actually not finding it is also impossible: even the buss stop is called Tchekhovsky Domik - The Tchekhov House. Allusions to Tchekhov are all over the city: the Tchekhov Theatre, a monument to the writer, a library and a school named after the great author... Tchekhov first came to Yalta in 1888; he returned five years later, this time for medicinal purposes, and stayed in Room 39 at the Rossiya Hotel. The Crimean climate was recommended to the writer suffering from consumption by his doctor. In 1898 he permanently moved to Yalta with his mother and sister. The small two-storey house built on the land Tchekhov bought was nicknamed the White Dacha by the locals. The writer stayed here until 1904. Thanks to his sister, every single detail was lovingly preserved the way it looked on the day of his departure from Yalta on 1 May 1904: the dining room, the study, his mother's bedroom on the second floor. Tchekhov's sister held the post of the director at the museum house for 36 years. The guest list of the house is impressive: Maxim Gorky, Fyodor Chaliapin, Sergey Rakhmaninov, Konstantin Stanislavski et al. Many trees in the lush garden were planted by Thcekhov himself. There is also a bed of his favourite roses. During the five years Tchekhov spent in Yalta he wrote nine stories and two plays including Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard and The Lady with the Dog.
