All the best hotels in Yalta are the privately owned ones, this much you will be told by the locals. Admittedly, the "privately" part is taken quite literally here. The wealthy Russian and Ukrainian businessmen who love to spend their holidays in Yalta during the peak of the tourist season have long since acquired significant properties here - they bought them at the time when fabulous real estate could be purchased for peanuts in Yalta. These lucky people obviously have no need for a hotel or a guesthouse. The privately owned hotels mostly function as exclusive closed-door clubs reserved for the inner circle. One of these places, called 999, is located near Gaspra, by the Alupka motorway. Look for three gilded nines, you will find it hard to miss it. Don't expect to get a room during the high season, in July or August: sometimes no more than a single room is actually occupied and yet the guest, loathe to share the hotel with fellow lodgers, has booked all eight of them. During the rest of the time, if rooms are available, a bed for the night costs USD 100 per person (if you want to share the room with someone else, just double the rate). No, there is no website, just a phone number, an e-mail address and an exclusive club principle, we are told by the owner of the hotel who is a walking embodiment of the cream of the most flashy international brands. The hostess lets it be known that she is in the business only so she wouldn't have to spend her days at home doing her nails. The colour scheme of the 999 Club is dominated by beige and gold; there is usually a matching car or two parked by the entrance. The downside is being located so close to the motorway which is somewhat compensated by the indisputably impressive feel of the place. Don't even bother googling for additional info, it's just not there to find.
