To find the real beauty of the Crimea, look outside the borders of Yalta and other seacoast cities - go on slow leisurely walks in the mountains, leaving civilisation and everything that comes with it far below. Zolotaya Podkova is located near the so-called Dolina Privideniy or Ghost Valley in the village of Luchistoye near Alushta. Originally it was just a horse rental stable offering longer or shorter riding tours; now accommodation is also available. Forget European standards, you will be offered just the bare essentials (including hot water). The rooms sleep four and cost EUR 22 a night. The owner makes a mean coal-grilled shish-kebab (or shashlik as it is called here) at the adjacent makeshift rustic restaurant. A stone's throw from there you will find the stone immortalised in the iconic Soviet era comedy Prisoner of the Caucasus (Kavkazskaya Plennitsa) as well as the tree in which the legendary actor Yuri Nikulin was sitting in a scene from the same film. Everything quite genuine and warm! To check the availability of the rooms, call 80506686349 (ask for Tatyana).
