Restaurant 34, London

A new gourmet destination has recently opened its doors at 34 Grosvenor Square, a stone's throw from the U.S. Embassy in London: the 34 Restaurant, featuring the traditional Argentine parrilla coal grill in the role of its 'sacrificial altar' on which grass-fed and dry-aged North Argentine and Scottish beef, corn-fed beef from Kanzas and Australian wagyu are transformed into outstandingly good grilled meat dishes. The 34 Restaurant, the latest addition to the Caprice group of restaurants, is, according to its owner Richard Caring, the only steak restaurant among the hordes of countless London steakhouses. While 34 is definitely aiming for luxury, the décor of the spacious restaurant (seating 100), featuring a touch of Art Deco and references to the British contemporary art world, has been designed to create a relaxed and easy atmosphere, made warmer still by the friendly service. Candle light complements the golden-brown and red tones of the copper cutlery; the salt and pepper shakers snuggle in the hand with the full weight of solid silver: it is time to sample our starter, Lincolnshire Onion Tart (GBP 11.50) with fabulous caramelised onions and sprinkles of crisp sweetbreads, as well as the great combination of textures that is 34's Foie Gras with Garlic Tortelloni (GBP 8.50), so that we can go on to enjoy their excellent New York Strip Steak (350 g, GBP 38.00) with peppercorn sauce. In case your eyes turn out to be bigger than your stomach and your choice of steak - too ambitious, the restaurant offers a special doggy bag designed by the scandalous British artist Tracy Emin who happens to be a close personal friend of Richard Caring's.
