Anselm Kiefer, Royal Academy of Arts, September 27 - December 14, 2014

At the end of this month, London will host the first retrospective of works by well-known German artist Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) in the United Kingdom. Kiefer is considered to be one of the most influential artists of his generation. During a career that has spanned more than four decades, the artist has created paintings, sculptures, installations and drawings, many of which are housed in the most prestigious public and private art collections. Kiefer is known for his admiration and depiction of the forces of nature in his works, as well as his interest in Germany's tumultuous 20th-century history. He has been called an alchemist who skilfully incorporates elements from mythology, the Bible, the Kabbalah, history, philosophy and dance. Kiefer adds an extra sense of symbolism and depth to his oeuvres through the materials that he uses in their creation, including clay, ash, earth, lead, cloth and dried flowers.
