Rufus Wainwright

Elton John calls Rufus Wainwright the best singer-songwriter of our time, and it's hard not to agree with Sir Elton. In fact, he is more than just the best - he's also the most diverse of contemporary singer-songwriters. Master of extravagant gestures, he is an adept of aestheticised pop music in which he declares his love for cabaret, Broadway musicals, opera and liturgical music. For over ten years Rufus Wainwright has been enjoying the status of a cult figure in the bohemian art circles. Summer 2009 saw the world premiere of Wainwright's debut in the operatic genre, his Prima Donna (performed in French), which took place at the Manchester Arts Festival; it is a dramatic story of a day in the life of an aging prima donna who is considering a possible return to the stage. In April 2010, the production is running at London's Sadler's Wells; in June it will be shown at the Luminato Festival of Arts.
In April, Rufus Wainwright launches his European tour in support of his new piano album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu; in this programme, he will be alone on the stage, singing and playing the piano.
