The 192-year old London's Old Vic is a legendary playhouse that has witnessed some of the highest peaks of British stage acting. Historically and architecturally, it is among the most sophisticated theatres in London. The great 19th-century English tragedy actor Edmund Kean starred in Macbeth, Richard III, Othello and King Lear on the stage of the Old Vic; most of the greatest 20th-century British actors, many of them - also international film stars, have appeared on this stage, including John Gielgud, Alec Guinness, Laurence Olivier, Peter O'Toole, Judi Dench, Glenda Jackson, Sir Ben Kingsley, et al.
Since 2003, the post of the Artistic Director is held by Kevin Spacey, a brilliant stage and screen actor. He has become one of the Old Vic's most powerful attractions: both the creative leader of the theatre and a director, Spacey also appears on the stage as an actor.
In association with New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Old Vic continues to take part in the ambitious Bridge Project transatlantic art programme. The concept of the three-year project is unique: the theatre and film director Sam Mendes (better known among wider circles as the director of American Beauty and Road to Perdition) and his colleagues and his colleagues have taken on the task of staging a selection of "the greatest of the greatest" masterpieces on both sides of the ocean - working with a group of handpicked masters of the stage, striking sparks of creative energy as the two different cultural experiences meet and join. Summer 2011 and winter 2012 will see the final instalment of the Bridge Project brought to London and New York respectively: a production of William Shakespeare's Richard III with Kevin Spacey in the title role.
