Dukes Bar, London

Author: Anothertravelguide.com

Dukes Bar, in the nostalgic and charming Dukes Hotel, hidden in a short lane off St. James Street, is one of the London's secret addresses. It's here that you will find the best martini in town - in fact, some connoisseurs can assure you that it's the best on the planet. In addition to having this distinction, the aura of the place also bears connection to Bond, James Bond - it's said that the inspiration for 007's cocktails came to Ian Fleming in this bar. Dukes seems like the set of a film from the moment you enter - less for an action picture than for something Fellini or Visconti might direct. As some places might ask about bread or water, at Dukes the waiter will ask how you would like your martini, of course - dry or not so dry, with a mere dash of vermouth or a splash. It's a classic club atmosphere with small, dark wooden tables, silk curtains and a fireplace. Once you've stated your preference, a wooden cart arrives and your martini is prepared before you. Every gesture is theatrical, and everything is perfect - the vodka, for example, is ice cold Polish Potocki Vodka, kept cold for at least twenty-four hours. The vermouth is poured first - then, with a gesture yet more graceful, the vodka. Finally the waiter adds a lemon peel - not from any ordinary lemon but from an organically grown Sicilian fruit. The whole procedure is unutterably refined, simple but of exquisite elegance. The drink itself tastes like a work of art, the quintessence of harmony in its flavour. Sipping it, you can dive into a deep conversation about one of the world's greatest cities and its inimitable literature.
