Sting: The Symphonicity Tour
The rock veteran Sting is embarking on a summer tour with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra under the direction of Steven Mercurio, performing a selection of his best songs both from the Police era and his more recent solo career arranged for a symphony orchestra. After all, as the musician quips, a good song just can't be spoiled... According to Sting, quite a few of his musical themes had originally been borrowed from classical music. Some of the best experts are responsible for the arrangements featured in the new programme, including the legendary French composer Michel Legrand. Sting says he does not want the 45-strong orchestra sound like a background to his vocals as it would be boring for everyone involved: himself, the musicians and the listeners. Instead, they are aiming for the orchestra to contribute a significant rhythmical element to the music. The classical musicians are going to have to work quite hard on the stage and, also according to Sting, they are very happy about it. The sound will be further enhanced by a rock quartet comprising some of Sting's most faithful associates. Summer 2010 sees Sting's Symphonicity Tour hit a number of North American cities. Perhaps it would be worth your while to travel to New York just to hear Sting perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera.
