Grand Hotel Majestic

Author: Māris un Eva Bensoni0 COMMENTS

For Italians August is a vacation month, spent mostly at Mediterranean beaches or lakeshores of Northern Italy. Along with a windy Lake Garda and Lake Como, with George Clooney's villa on it, Lago Maggiore is undeniably one of the most romantic ones. A bit smaller, more scenic and possessing a supreme charm - dotted with tiny islands, featuring exotic gardens in full bloom. For many centuries Isola Bella is one of the most beautiful among them. Carefully cherished by generations of the Borromeo family, it prides in a wonderful garden, laid out in several levels. A monumental Baroque palace is surrounded by majestic trees, blooming bushes, exotic flowers and graceful sculptures. White peacocks walk free among the lush greenness and a thrilling sensation embraces there! Along with Isola Bella, Lago Maggiore prides itself in a number of other picturesque islands, like Isola Madre, Isola Pescatori and a few more.

Only one side of Lago Maggiore is scattered with villas and resorts, while Grand Hotel Majestic has settled in the opposite side - not far from the town of Verbania - away from buzz and bustle of nearby villages. Its small but perfectly groomed garden is an ideal spot for enjoying the sun and a sweeping view on the lake supplements a swim in the pool! A shallow beach, so unusual for a lake surrounded by mountains, is a just great for moms having arrived there with small kids. Guests of the Grand Hotel Majestic do not need to worry that warm lake water might be too deep for their offspring. The weather is magic, too - a fresh breeze, due to a special, characteristic to this place air circulation makes even the heat of +36°C most enjoyable - no sweating or fainting! It appears that Italians have found an excellent escape from summer swelter.
Presence of other holiday-makers at Grand Hotel Majestic can hardly be noticed. Those, who arrive by water, get moored at the hotel's jetty, drink a glass of champagne at the restaurant, then get back in their boats and leave. Yet, this is a favorite dining place for guests from the opposite shore and a table should be booked in advance. Another choice is a nearby Milano (Corso Zanitello 2, Verbania Pallanza, Phone: +39 0323 556816, closed on Tuesdays). It is a traditional Italian style restaurant, located about seven minutes walking distance from the hotel. Though a little weather-worn, it features an excellent local cuisine and a solid wine cellar. Gourmets will be impressed! Even salmon is of local origin there, not a Norwegian import as thoughtfully remarks a waiter, dispelling any hesitance. Freshness - unsurpassable! And be sure to choose a dish with "a plate" - an equivalent of "a green spoon" in Latvia, it denotes a usage of locally produced products. Having chosen "a plate" four times in other Lago Maggiore restaurants, too, the fifth time will earn you a reward.
If the absolute tranquility of Grand Hotel Majestic becomes a bit tedious, a small ship, cruising about every 20 minutes, will take you across the lake to the small resort town Stresa of about 5,000 inhabitants, unfolding on the other shore. A sparkling Italian music fills its main square, kids play football in the streets and bubbly town life instantly surrounds you!
