ABC House

Fabulous view over Milan's inner yards, church-bells instead of an alarm clock and a small rural market almost at your threshold! The ABC House is located in S.Agostino square, just three minutes walking distance from the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio in the very centre of Milan.
The ABC House is not a hotel and can not be found on hotel websites either. A seemingly ordinary apartment in reality has nothing "ordinary" about it. Flashing paintings in red by local artists (offered for sale, too) decorate vibrant green walls but someplace else fluorescent lighting tubes are used to supplement its interior. One will not pass by without noticing a huge black foot - perhaps the boldest interior item there - placed close to the entrance. In fact it is pretty practical, too, and can be used for sitting or putting your bag and keys on. In spite of being much out of the common, the apartment is cozy and stylish, featuring items that are available at the very best interior stores. With the ABC House's hostess - having had a career at Italian Vogue, and her husband - being an architect - the interior of the apartment is a reflection of their artistical taste as well.
It is located on the 6th floor and is available from summer 2007. Every detail is very artfully designed, new and fresh. Linen towels - with lace edges, a bookshelf - loaded with heaps of Vogue magazines, even from the 70ies, and fresh milk every morning at the door. It seems like a fairytale! Some snacks can be found in a fridge, yet, there is a small kitchen, leading out on a lovely balcony, tooled up with anything you might need to prepare a meal. And fresh products, too, are waiting at the very threshold! A small market occupies a nearby parking lot every Tuesday, during the rest of a week visiting other places of Milan. Various cheeses, meat, dried tomatoes and delicatessen along with greens and spices is a great starting for a breakfast! Dishes in the kitchen, by the way, enough for a few friends as well...It is easy to get carried away! Just a couple of days at the ABC House - and you almost feel like a genuine Milanese yourself!
The owners of the apartment live nearby and, if needed, are ready to offer their help. For example, in choosing a restaurant to have a dinner, it is safe to rely on hostess's advice, too.

Price - 100 Euro per day.

Charming restaurants and eateries alongside canals

The charm of Milan opens up mostly in its Southern part - not overwhelmed by mass tourism and with Dior's glossy ads just starting to conquer some smaller streets. Milan for Milanese, so to say... Fantastic club-type cafés, closely side by side, at the canal near Via Cardinale Ascanio Sforza Street. A canal close to Ripa di Porta Ticinese, on its part, is dotted with a bit more expensive restaurants. Both places frequented mostly by Italians. Just keep in mind that tables of eateries are put out only around 9 p.m. and owners look puzzled if to someone it seems too late. About in an hour families with kids gather and a gourmet feast may start! The hungriest will rejoice at "happy hours" - order a drink (never below 4 euro in Milan) and a Swedish table for free. Pasta, picas, salads, bacon... Eat as much as you can!
Cobà Disco Latino (Via Ascanio Sforza, 37) with fantastic live music in salsa rhythms is a gathering place of almost all the cream of Latin-American community, living in Italy. Somewhere else tables are placed along the very brink of a canal - with water almost within arm's reach.

Café on the street crossing

To lie on a sofa in the middle of the street! Such an extraordinary experience waits at the Piazzale XXIV Maggio square - not far from its junction with Corso Di Porta Ticinese. A weather-worn one storey building in the Southern Colonial Style rises in the middle of the street, but a slightly bohemian atmosphere streams inside. Interior - apart from old posters, decorating walls - almost nonexistent. Locals - settled among pillows on small sofas, and a host himself - with bleached hair and attired in a white tuxedo, is clinking glasses with other equally eccentric fellows. Moreover, a sofa is placed outside, too, with hasty traffic just couple of feet away! With dust hitting in the face - Milan is not the cleanest city in the world - it is not a place for a pleasant meal, yet, it may be a great stop after a longish walk. „Happy hours" and good wine also there.

Trattoria Toscana

Another lovely spot to savor some snacks and light drinks is Trattoria Toscana, located nearby. Do not expect to have a substantial meal there, yet, its lively and relaxing atmosphere is more delicious then food. Italians talk loud and the place is always packed. Tables can be reached only going through the kitchen, bustling with cooks. In winter guests may sit in a cozy, bamboo-decorated veranda, heated with special lamps. During „happy hours" a Swedish table available for your enjoyment as well.
