Jazz at Lincoln Center etc.

Author: Jānis Notte2 COMMENTS

Manhattan, the Greatest Country on Earth, as my New York friends have dubbed it. What an overwhelming pride, yet, New York City is unique, indeed, and from a political and a cultural aspect not like any other city in the States. Whenever I return to New York, I find something novel about it. And I am convinced - if only you have explored New York thoroughly enough, it's no big deal that you haven't seen the rest of the world. New York could be the capital of the world, if such title was awarded - a destination number one for those who proudly claim to be cosmopolitans. It's not that limitations have been torn down - they have never existed there.

Jazz at Lincoln Center

For those who love jazz, this place at the Central Park is well-know already. Those, who have never heard of it, would perhaps be interested to know that it's a part of the prestigious Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Opened in 2004 in Columbus Circle, the southwestern corner of the Central Park, Jazz at Lincoln Center is engaged in jazz education and offers diverse concert program all the year round. Art of the most brilliant jazz musicians can be savored there. It consists of three main concert venues - Rose Theater, Dizzy's Club and The Allen Room. The last one is worth a special visit - it features huge windows that overlook the Central Park, offering breathtaking scenery, and artists performing there do deserve to be called Singers Over Manhattan. Tickets should be better booked ahead, however, once I was lucky enough to get a last minute ticket to Kurt Elling concert. When the performance is over, you may immerse in the elegant ambiance of Dizzy's Club - for additional fee - where rising stars on the jazz scene show their flair.
A tagline of this music establishment goes - When jazz is killin' hearts see clearer. Late at night leaving Jazz at Lincoln Center, I have to smile how appropriate it is.

Hotel 17

Although New York is the city that never sleeps and maybe you are just for a short stay there, you still need a hotel. A choice for several hundreds of dollars per night is pretty vast, yet, to find a budget lodging in this metropolis is not an easy task at all. Comparing with other cities of the world, hotel prices in New York are steep. Sparing wallets of travelers is Hotel 17, located in the East Village, a neighborhood, having considerable enriched American music and literature. Never-ceasing vitality of Union Square is just a few blocks away, the same way as St. Mark's Place, packed with small cafes and little shops, owned by Japanese emigrants. Unlike Soho and Tribeka areas in downtown New York, fascinating tourists with trendy stores and elegant hotels and restaurants, the East Village has not yet reached those sky-rocketing heights of real estate prices. Ordinary New Yorkers live there and the place seems more authentic. Rooms are quite small and corridors narrow, yet the overall feeling at the Hotel 17 is very pleasant and cozy. Interestingly, that a few years ago Woody Allen filmed his movie Manhattan Murder Mystery there Madonna has stayed at the Hotel 17, too.

Uniqlo

One of the few overseas outlets of the leading Japanese clothing retail chain is opened in the very heart of downtown Manhattan, close to Spring Street. A kitschy street fashion of Tokyo together with pretty pleasant quality and price proportion is a refreshing newcomer in the fast-fashion segment, dominated mostly by Spanish Zara so far. A huge menswear department, spread over two Uniqlo floors (total area of the store is 3.300 m2), features high quality printed T-shirts by graphical designers in Tokyo, London and New York. Choice seems limitless and a price of $15 per piece affordable, considering the quality and the design. You cannot pass by without notice bright colored cashmere-cotton jumpers for $75-$125, with a well-suited name of Pantone color system, given to this collection. Other items of clothing and accessories (jackets, bags, multi-colored socks) are commendable, too. Furthermore, as to creativity (and perhaps quality, too) Uniqlo easily surpasses its fast-fashion counterparts.

Odin

Shop till you drop - this phrase perfectly characterizes a combination of New York shopping options and daily distances covered for this purpose. While splendid stores of Broadway and Soho are much alike their counterparts all over the world, the true gems of New York are to be found a bit away from those tremendously popular areas. The one certainly worth mentioning is Odin - New York's best men's boutique, according to New York Magazine nomination of 2007. Odin stores are quite small, yet, comprising the very best of trendy urban fashion clothing and accessories for men. You can acquire there such internationally renowned brands as Yohji Yamamoto Y-3, as well as New York designer clothes, footwear and accessories. Odin features also a wide range of Comme des Garçons perfumes - you will hardly find a choice like that anyplace else.

New Museum

Opening of the New Museum undeniably is one of the brightest events of New York's cultural life of the recent time. The museum's concept is to present new ideas and young, little-known artists to a wider audience, as so far only galleries gave them this opportunity. The museum building itself is truly amazing and worth seeing. Designed by a duet of Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa or SANAA, it is placed among rather shabby Bowery Street buildings. It gives an impression that the New Museum has landed there just by coincidence or by a conceptual similarity with its first exposition - entitled Unmonumental. And, indeed, however unusual the museum building or works presented there might be, it doesn't have any grand ambitions of becoming an icon of art or architecture. It just makes you realize that new and bold ideas can find their manifestation anywhere, particularly in New York.
