Colonia del Sacramento

Author: Elita Kārkliņa0 COMMENTS

A colonial town in southwestern Uruguay, founded in 17th century by the Portuguese, is the oldest in this country. It takes one hour to reach it from Buenos Aires, crossing an entry of Rio De La Plata by a small ship. Step ashore and you step into a fairytale, full of small and fabulous bars, restaurants, shops and country hotels. Wandering around the cobbled streets under street lamps you may marvel at every single house there - renewed, yet, preserving the authentic spirit of the time.
A stunning sunset at Rio de la Plata, with Buenos Aires glittering far in the distance! A most romantic spot in the middle of nowhere...Colonia del Sacramento is registered on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.
In case you find yourself in Uruguay, it is worth visiting its capital, too. The main attraction of this city, with a population over 1,000,000, is its tranquility. Just walk around and relax... The best way to get there, if your way leads from Buenos Aires, is a three-hour journey by a small ship. And one more pleasant surprise - Uruguayans very good command of English language.
