The famous Odessa's book market, located on Alexander Boulevard, is a fantastic place to get some food for brain or just absorb its unique vibes. Stretching out for the length of a whole city block, it faces the historic commercial square of the city. There you can find books in any field - from school text books and dictionaries to guide books, art and fashion almanacs and books on history, psychology, philosophy or any other subject. Books both for children and adults. Yet typically to the 21th century, number of books has somewhat dwindled, giving space to DVD format films and computer games. Movie lovers will be thrilled at its vast choice spanning from cinema classics to latest Hollywood blockbusters, from Bertolucci and Fellini to Kira Muratova, making her films mostly in Odessa. DVDs vary from the original for 45 hryvnia to piratical ones for just 30 per disc. No fret about pig-in-a-poke purchase either - sellers know each other and will explain what's what there. Moreover, quantity discount are granted, and any specific book or a film, you are looking for, will be found in no time, if only it is available there at all. Opposite the book stalls, some elderly men are carried away by a chess game, and a small travelling kitchen offers a hot meal. But at the farthest end, behind some benches that gather colorful characters of the local community, you will notice a yellow barrel-shaped trailer with kvass. It stirs up nostalgic memories for those, who have spent their childhood in the Soviet era. The difference is that kvass is poured in plastic glasses now, instead of typical, cast glass ones, called granjonki, and the drink itself seems somewhat thinner, lacking the old day savor...or maybe it just appears so. Yet it is worth trying anyway - a small glass costs just 1.5 hryvnia, but 1 liter - 6 hryvnia.
