Mama Shelter
The very first Mama Shelter - a budget hostel and a chic hotel hybrid was opened in 2008 in a remote 20th arrondissement of Paris and it was set in a former multi-story car park. It couldn't have been a more precise hit, especially considering that the design author was no other but Philippe Starck, already famous for his original luxury hotel designs. With its friendly rates and fascination of Starck, the hotel instantaneously launched itself into a domain of stylish destinations.
Soon after and with an equal success, Mama Shelter settled down in two more French cities - Marseille and Lyon. Just recently Mama's forth clone was opened in Istanbul and it is Starck's creation again! This time he has managed to conjure up a brisk and humorous version of a hotel as an "urban marketplace" - a very image of the city on the historic crossroads between East and West with all the influences imaginable present there. Its laconic rooms are like white canvas, adorned with graffiti and icons of popular culture, such as masks of Batman and Shrek that are placed on lamps. The hotel is situated in Beyoglu area, right next to the lively Istiklal Caddesi Street and features 81 rooms, varying from 17m² to 42m² in size and 69 to 109 euros in price.
