Commonly underrated, motorcycling is, in my opinion, the best way to travel. To be sure, it does demand more responsibility, attention and planning than plain sitting behind the wheel of a car; at the same time it allows the traveller to take in the surrounding world in a so much more direct way. As a surfer observes the wind each morning, so a motorcyclist watches for the rain. Will it, won’t it? Shall I just wear the usual gloves? Will I have time to put on the waterproofs? And so on. But as you gather some decent speed, your nostrils are hit by an avalanche of scents and smells – the air gets so compressed that the pine forest, fields and fertilizer, dusty pond, moss in the woods and flowers in the meadows all permeate your senses as you rush by. And another thing – the bike teaches you to do with very little: two bags suspended on either side of the saddle if there’s two of you, and that’s it. Okay, so maybe a backpack as well.
