René Magritte, Albertina, 9 November through 26 February, 2012

The latest exhibit at Vienna's Albertina museum features one of the most popular agents of the surrealistic movement - René Magritte (1898-1967). Considered the most influential person in 20th century Belgian art, Magritte's metaphors on common and banal objects are familiar even to those for whom art is not a part of daily life. 150 works of art (including his iconographic samples) have been transported to Vienna from around the world, introducing the viewer to virtually all of the periods of the artist's career and life, beginning with the 1920's and up to his death in 1967. The exhibition reveals the overlapping fields of Magritte's paintings and his commercial work, as well as the undeniable influences of pop-culture found therein. Special attention has been given to the erotic motifs in the artist's work, which often remain unnoticed to the casual observer. Magritte worked with various mediums, and the curators have taken this into consideration by also displaying his drawings and collages. Rarely seen photographs and amateur films give viewers an insight into nuances of the artist's private life, including his relationship with his wife and muse - Georgette, and his collaboration with the Belgian surrealist group. The exhibit has been produced in cooperation with the Tate Liverpool.
