Abstract! 100 Years of Abstract Photography 1917–2017, Finnish Museum of Photography, November 1 – January 14, 2018

The exhibition Abstract! 100 Years of Abstract Photography 1917–2017 at the Finnish Museum of Photography is honouring the centennial of a genre. Interestingly, although today abstract photography is an integral part of visual culture, it was initially met with sharp criticism.

Called an aimless activity, it was derided for contradicting the true essence of photography, namely, to depict and immortalise reality. In addition to classics of the genre such as Alvin Langdon Coburn, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and August Strindberg, the exhibition also features the work of many Finnish photographers.
